This is a shot from the Cowgirl Creamery up in Point Reyes Station from our trip to Sonoma back in May- yet another past travel post that needs doin'
Greetings! Posting will be happening more frequently once the computer situation is resolved - which should be very soon. I have so many posts to catch up on - Sonoma recap (see pic above), summer market days, Malibu wineries, Temecula wineries, brunches (they’re the new dinner party), etc. All this good fooding plus the added benefit of meeting up with some really fantastic, generous, and knowledgeable people has made it a most excellent summer, and most of it within driving reach. So much exploratory food goodness. And, to add happy to happy, the basil plants this year have drowned me in pesto. I’ve been freezing pesto cubes with glee, knowing that come winter, I’ll be able to have some pretty glorious pesto pasta. Also gearing up for some mad, mad preserving. My friend L is a farm-raised import from Indiana and has been begging me to have a good ole fashioned cannin’ in my kitchen. Going to scoop up the last of the summer’s pickling cukes, peppers, and stone fruits in a few weeks. I’m also planning a day trip out to the San Bernardino apple farms in October for a few bushels of orchard gloriola. Apple butter will happen. Oh yes.
JJ and I are actually getting ready to head out the door on yet another excursion - this time to San Diego. SD is about a two-hour drive south from us, has sweet, cool ocean breezes, and has the added bonus of being a sort of second home. My parents called La Jolla their home for a while and my sister currently lives in Pacific Beach - she’ll be playing hostess to us while we splore the southland.
Hopes for this trip? I’d really like to do some tide pooling in La Jolla. It’s right next to the San Diego MOCA
so we can hit two tweets with one stone. Oh and while we’re there we can stop by the Girard Gourmet
- gucci sandwich maker to the rich and powerful of LJ, where lemon pepper rains upon everything. I usually get the pate sandwich - nom. They’re a 20-year business resident of La Jolla and have managed to retain some of their small-town quirkiness while the rest of LJ has sprouted up with high-end stores and exclusive boutiques.
There’s a wine festival this weekend just across the border in Ensenada. Bullfights and vino! The Inspector would have been so proud. One of the events scheduled is their 17th annual paella making contest. Yum! Sadly, we’ll be missing those this year but it has planted the seed in my head for future visits. I often forget how close we are to Mexico here - need to fix that and make it a part of the itinerary more often.
There’s the new Sea Rocket Bistro
- the menu is almost entirely locally grown or caught food. Might do that one with sis. I have a hankering to venture to The Better Half
in Hillcrest with JJ (aw). Which means we can saunter through Hillcrest, which I love to do - such a great neighborhood. Sis might be up for their farmers’ market this weekend too. She’s also promised a visit to her favorite eat haus - The Linkery, and possibly Phil’s BBQ for some hedonistic meat feeding.
A few loose ends to tie up and then we’re outta here. See you soon…
