Maybe it’s because summer is winding down and people are spending more time in their kitchens and at their keyboards (it’s been surprisingly chilly here the past few mornings…in August no less). Maybe it’s because the food blogging world is just full of that much marvelous. Maybe both! Regardless, I’ve come across some pretty diverting posts lately that I wanted to share. On with the linkage!
First, a quick shout out to Jason over at Off the Broiler for the sausage links image above. Gratz on the weight loss! Though I think I gained a few just thinking about sausage.
From a Friend of Lady Muriel – That seriously needs to be the title of a novel. In this case, it’s a phrase excerpted from a newspaper cutting found in George Orwell’s diary for his August 22, 1938 entry. It’s a recipe for sloe gin, allegedly taken down onto paper directly from the words of a Romany woman. Such a poetic little clipping, with a recipe to boot. Just lovely.
Nostradamus’ Cherry Jelly – not kidding. This comes from François-Xavier at FXcuisine. For his 200th post (the other 199 are just as fascinating by the way), he translated a recipe from Nostradamus’ first book. Color me stunned, but the famed oracle’s first book was a cookbook on jams and jellies. He walks you through the recipe with pictures – big gorgeous, well-lit pictures. Go read. Oh you also might like this post and this one too.
A Plea for Meaty Assistance – Tea, of Tea and Cookies, is writing a book about meat. This is significant for two reasons - she was raised as a vegetarian, and the woman can write, I mean really write, about food and life. I am so buying this book when it comes out. Part of the writing process involves trying to eat meat every day, but she’s run plum out of recipes. Go help her out. The comment thread is already a nice little treasury of suggestions. And then read every post she’s ever made. Seriously.
Fair Food – I’ve seen a lot of fried foods on a stick (avocados, snickers, hardboiled eggs, etc.) but I hadn’t seen cinnamon rolls on a stick yet. Brilliant little idea. Want to do it for brunch soon.
Tomorrow? Pickling and canning my fool head off. Hasta…
