Remodeling your deck can be big or small project

Written By Paul Mullins

Nobody wants to go through life looking at the same old deck every day. If you're in need of a change when it comes to your outdoor living space, then you can start redecorating it or build a totally different new one.

The very first thing you should start with is by thoroughly cleaning the area if you want to use the same space. A pressure washer and cleaners designed for deck cleaning may reveal an area that looks better than you remember. You can achieve a brand new appearance for your deck by washing it with some water sealant, even if it is made of pressure treated wood.

Once the cleaning is done you can go on with your deck remodeling by replacing the furniture. Often we furnish our decks in a haphazard manner or reuse furniture long after its faded and discolored. Look at new, color-coordinated options and rugs designed for outdoor use. Or why not use your gardening skills and add some annual flowers to liven it up?

It is not only the deck that you need to think about when redecorating, but also its surroundings. Just to have something to occupy your attention while spending time outside on your deck, you could plant some trees and shrubs, that add to the privacy of the place, or you can delight your senses with a small pond or water fountain.

You can spend a lot of money adding items to your old deck and you still won't get the same fresh effect that an overall remodeling would offer.

You may choose to rebuild your entire outdoor space, or limit yourself to smaller construction projects that will add some newness to the place. The outdoors of your home gives you enough space to turn your imagination loose, not to mention the huge sea of ideas and tips found on the internet and in specialty magazines.

If you run on a low budget, lattice panels or bamboo screens to protect you from intruding eyes, would make a nice change. Ready made canopies and sheer fabric curtains can add to the secluded feel and the uses of your outdoor space. If you want to add some color, you can always use a new paint on the place or paint 'rugs' on its floor. These simple projects have the advantage of not being time-consuming, as they can be done in one weekend.

On a budget that includes a total replacement of the deck, you may want to consult a professional. To achieve a more modern and elegant look for your deck, you may want to build a tiered or a broadly curved one, also using new fabricated materials to make it more resistant to weather changes and thus more durable. These projects will be more expensive and time consuming, but will give you a new area you can enjoy for years to come.

Whatever option you choose, remodeling your deck is likely to make you eager for warm weather and outdoor entertaining.
